Saturday of the Ninth Week of Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

Today is one of my favorite Gospel passages. We read of the poor widow who put her two cents in the collection. I see through my work in Conception’s Development Office, we receive donations ranging from large checks to 50 cents. It would be easy to scoff and think, “really? That’s it?” But the Holy Spirit reminds me of this little passage, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury…from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

We can not only contribute our wealth to those in need, but we can also give our talents to serve others and to serve God and offer them up to Him. Look back at yesterday’s reflection, not only can we offer up trials and difficulties, but with humility, we can offer up the talents that God has given us no matter how big or how small. We can offer these as a sacrifice of love.

There may be times when you think that it is impossible to do this, but remember “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” God accepts everything that is offered to him in love, no matter what the trial, difficulty, or joy. Always remember that out of love, the Kingdom of heaven belongs to us.
