Today's Readings On this day, February 22, we interrupt our observance of Lent so that we can celebrate the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle. The “chair” is a reference to the teaching authority of St. Peter. In the ancient world, teachers sat in a chair when they taught. The Latin word for “chair” is “cathedra.” That is where we get the name for “cathedrals” in the Church. The cathedral is the church where one finds the teaching chair of the bishop.
